Still on The Hunt

I don't have history with this club yet no old grudges with Lone Jack, no "remember when" stories. Just my seat at Happy Rock Park, a growing list of player names I'm still learning to pronounce, and a couple months of showing up. Everything still feels a little like magic at this stage, and today didn't do anything to change that.

Northland were on it from the opening whistle. But give Lone Jack Athletic credit they found gaps in that back line with some genuinely well-timed balls early on, enough to make it feel for a few minutes like this might turn into the match that decides the rest of the season.

It didn't take long for Sammy to settle things down. Inside the first twenty minutes he found the net and put Northland up 1-0. Lone Jack answered by leaning on the pressure again, pushing right up until the water break and then something shifted.

The Water Break Changed Everything

Funny thing to say about a mandated hydration stop, but it's true. Just like the World Cup taught a lot of us, that break resets a match's rhythm completely. Northland came out of it a different team, suddenly the ones putting balls out wide for runners to chase, clearly trying to use their pace to stretch Lone Jack thin.

And it might have worked beautifully if the finishing had matched the buildup. Chance after chance, shot after shot, miss after miss. If even a portion of those had gone in, this was a 3-0 game before halftime. Instead, the sides went into the break at 1-0 a scoreline that flattered Lone Jack a little, given how the second twenty-five minutes actually went.

Heat, Tempers, and One More From Sammy

The humidity showed up right alongside the physicality. More contact, more chirping between the two sides, a match that had clearly decided it wasn't going to stay clean. In the middle of all that, Sammy struck again his second of the day and Northland had the cushion they needed at 2-0.

The Sideshow

No match like this ends without a subplot, and this one had a real one. Not long after the water break, Northland's #15 Zawadi Jombu one of the few faces back from last season, which is exactly the kind of continuity a young club needs to start building real identity got into a heated exchange with Ellyh Kokouvi, the player-coach-owner on the Lone Jack side. Both picked up yellow cards and a pointed reminder to keep their heads.

That reminder didn't hold. Later on, a foul was called in the box, and Kokouvi reacting now from his spot as coach rather than as a player made his feelings about the call very clear. Second yellow, and he was sent from the technical area for the rest of the match.

Down a coach and down a game plan, Lone Jack had nothing left to answer with. Northland calmly managed the rest of the match and closed it out, 2-0.

A two-goal win keeps Northland exactly where they need to be for now the rest of it just depends on whether Real OP and Southside FC did their part. I'll be checking those results the second they're in.
